A room with a view

I got brave today and used the skill-saw! I've always been terrified of skill-saws, after watching my brother slice his leg with one. But the hand saw wasn't going to cut it (pun of course) so I pulled out the bad boy.

I got some wall bracing up and some of the foam board insulation in. I have to cover the insulation or the chickens will just eat it! I glued the window in but I need to paint the trim boards so it looks pretty gross with the black glue showing right now. It will look nice when the trim is on. You can see in the pictures what a nice view everyone will have with the big acrylic window. Charm and Candy are showing you how well they'll be able to keep an eye on the chickens in the house. =) I hung the door to the nests with hinges and also the door to feed the chickens on hinges.

Seems like I'll never get this done!

Windy/Rocky babies 3 weeks old

The babies are getting active! Its so cute to watch them play. Today they moved into the family room and Windy seems to be fine with the other dogs peeking at her pups. She's such a good-natured, easy going Havanese.

a few walls up

I haven't cut out for windows or ventilation yet, just hung some walls. Needed the shade! =)

another little bit done on the coop

I was on my own today since Scott went back to Arizona so I decided to get the wire attached and buried underground. Shoveling is back-breaking work and I didn't get nearly as much done as I did in my dream last night. More another day...

Growing like weeds! Everyone has had eyes open for several days. I haven't noticed any reaction to sounds yet but they should be able to hear any day now. Windy continues to be an excellent mommy =)

Chickens chickens

Someone had the great idea that she needed chickens. =) So I ordered some cute little baby chicks that will be here about April 11th.

Here is a collage of the baby chick picture and what the adult should look like. I plan to socialize them well and do "puppy" exercises daily. I'm actually quite afraid of birds so this will be an adventure for me. LOL
I designed my own plans from different coops I found on the internet. I purchased the wood and had a nice young man at Home Depot cut it for me. Then it all got painted:

Only one casualty but I was able to save it:

Then the ground work started using the tractor:

Everyone got a turn:

We dug down so we could bury wire to prevent any unwanted visitors. You'll see how this all goes together soon. =)

The coop and chicken yard is going right outside the puppy yard. They are all going to have so much fun watching the chickens!

Now on to digging holes for the posts. Oops. Another casualty. Please folks, remember to call for a blue-stake before you dig.

Fixed the conduit that holds the the electrical wiring and got back to setting up the coop.

Here's where we left off. The chickens will have a ramp to get up into the raised house via a hole in the floor. The bottom part will be wired in (remember the underground wire also) and that will be their little outdoor yard they have free access to anytime. They will have a large yard I will let them go into during the day and they'll come back to the small yard at dusk. This way they actually have an indoor and small outdoor area and I won't need to worry about something eating my chickens at night.

We are done for the day. A storm is coming in with high winds and snow so I don't know if we'll be able to work on it again until next week. Well, Scott I mean. I have to go to work the next few days and I expect if the weather isn't too bad that he'll get some wire buried and dirt backfilled before he heads back to Arizona on Tuesday.

More to come!

Windy's kids at 1 week

All is well in puppyland! Windy is being an exceptionally good mother. It always amazes me how a first time mom knows exactly what to do for her babies.=)

We had an issue mid-week with Windy digging in her box so I put her in a smaller box that has a piece of wood that fits on the floor. I wrapped it with bedding and she can't get it dug up. Everyone is much happier. They'll move into the larger box once they run out of room.
