so cute

The kids learned to run in and out of the dog door a few days ago. Imagine 7 little bodies all trying to go the opposite direction thru the door. Too funny. They think they hit the lottery!

On Tuesday, the Coffee kids will go in for their 2nd vaccine and microchip. The Flowers went last week. Then Tuesday afternoon the Flowers will get baths and Wed. the Coffees will get theirs! But first they'll get some leash training outside and eat some leaves and twigs and roll in good smells before the final cleaning. =)

Prep for traveling, double-checking bags, loading up the car and on Thursday morning we head to Phoenix AZ for all the babies to meet their new parents. Bittersweet.

Autumn will be staying with us for a while.

The flowers meet Dr Angela

All went well at the vet visit with Charm’s pups. Good lungs, hearts, bites (but Sweet Pea is still all gums). Autumn sang to me all the way there and back. Great. LOL

PAT testing

All the pups had their PAT testing done today. (Puppy Aptitude Test developed by Clarence Pfaffenberger in his book "The New Knowledge of Dog Behavior") and I was pleased with the results on all the pups. No real surprises except Sweet Pea. She's such a wild woman around here but was more demure with a stranger. She's a little clone of her momma Charm.

Charm's kids will get their first vet visit on Wed. 9/21 and Daisy's go on Tuesday 9/27.

They grow up so fast!

Daisy's Coffee kids are 6 weeks old

cam updates

Good morning folks.

When pups are inside the cam is Daisy's and when they go outside it will be Charm's.

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

This is the vaccination schedule that I use for my dogs. I do not use Bordatella, so it’s not listed but I know that some groomers or trainers require it. In the event that you must use it, I follow Dr Jean Dodd’s recommendation of:

Boretella (Intranasal) (killed) Only recommended 3 days prior to boarding or when required and not to be given at the same time as any other vaccine.

MINIMAL VACCINE USE
The schedule is one I recommend and should not interpreted to mean that other protocols recommended by a veterinarian would be less satisfactory.  It's a matter of choice. Please educate yourselves on vaccines! I strongly encourage minimal vaccine use.

Age of Pups
Vaccine Type

8-9 weeks

11-13 weeks (*3 ½ weeks after initial)

16 -18 weeks (*3 ½ weeks after 2nd)

20 weeks or older, if allowable by law

1 year after initial (approx. 16 months old)

1 year after initial (approx. 17 months old)

Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV (e.g. Intervet
                                     Progard Puppy DPV)
Same as above

Same as above

Rabies – no others!

Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV

Rabies, killed 3-year product (give 3-4 weeks apart from distemper/parvovirus booster)
Perform vaccine antibody titers for distemper and parvovirus every three years thereafter, or more often, if desired. Vaccinate for rabies virus according to the law, except where circumstances indicate that a written waiver needs to be obtained from the primary care veterinarian.  In that case, a rabies antibody titer can also be performed to accompany the waiver request.  See www rabieschallengefund.org

Vaccines Not Recommended  (From Dr Dodds website)

Corona
Not recommended.
1.) Disease only affects dogs <6 weeks of age.
2.) Rare disease: TAMU has seen only one case in seven years.
3.) Mild self-limiting disease.
4.) Efficacy of the vaccine is questionable.

Leptospirosis
Not recommended
1) There are an average of 12 cases reported annually in California.
2) Side effects common.
3) Most commonly used vaccine contains the wrong serovars. (There is no cross-protection of serovars) There is a new vaccine with 2 new serovars. Two vaccinations twice per year would be required for protection.).
4) Risk outweighs benefits.

Lyme
Not recommended
1) Low risk in California.
2) 85% of cases are in 9 New England states and Wisconsin.
3) Possible side effect of polyarthritis from whole cell bacterin.

Monday cam

Pups are on Charm's cam, outside playing in the pup yard. Painters are here so their xpen is completely taken down and tarps have taken its place! So they are enjoying the nice weather today in the playground.

Picture updates

Daisy's Coffee kids were 5 weeks on Tuesday:

And Charm's flowers 6 weeks old today:

I'll start weaning them on Sunday by restricting their mom's access to their pen and feeding soft kibble several times a day. Mom will be allowed to nurse after they've had some solid food. I'll be combining the 2 litters this week and enlarging their sleeping area to allow for more play. Hopefully they will continue to hit the UGO but if not, I'll just make it a little smaller to help them succeed.

Painters are coming Monday - Wed so the pups will be moved to the studio until I can put thir house back together and put their pen back up. RED paint! A nice dark "wine" is going on one accent wall with a tan-ish color on the others walls. I'm excited. Especially since I'm not the one doing it! =)

Those darn pups!

Well first, little Ms Sweet Pea has discovered her agility gene. Two mornings now I have found her outside her xpen, sleeping with the adults. This morning I couldn't find her right away and then her pretty little head pops up from a scrunched up blanket. Another Zorro in the making with that jumping gene! I tried to make the "wall" taller after the first night but she still got over. Stinker!

Then this morning, suddenly the pups discovered the webcams on top of the water jug. And they can reach it. And its great fun to pull it down. So the cam is off until I can figure out how to fix this problem.

Off to get my hair done. I had to cancel my last appointment because the pups were born early so I'm a few months overdue for a cut!

3 videos

Busy babies!

The kids have had a busy few days. I'm working on getting the videos up on YouTube now. There are 3 of them so it will take a while to upload them all. I'll post links soon.

Finally pictures

I seem to be getting worse on posting pictures! I get them on the camera but can't get computer time to make the collage. I won't promise to be better but I will try!

Daisy's pups were 4 weeks old on Tuesday and here is their collage.

Charm's pups were 5 weeks old yesterday.

All is well with the groups. They are playing together and having a good time running around. Charm's pups are enjoying the goats milk with mushed up kibble. Momma wasn't making enough milk for them and they were hungry all the time. Now she can rest between nursings with the supplements they get.

Charms flowers are 5 weeks old!

And they told me last night - WE ARE HUNGRY!!!

Daisy's pups - pictures soon!

Hopefully I can get them done tomorrow night!

The sound on the cams will be off for a while (probably till Tuesday). Family coming in town, lots of activity and sounds for the pups coming up. New people to meet too! I'll film their first outing this weekend and share that with everyone. Eventually when they are spending lots of play time in the enclosed yard, I'll try to figure out how to webcam that. Hmmmmm going to have to get creative!

Sunday, August 28, 2011

Over this and the coming weeks, we'll be watching personalities develop and getting an idea of which puppy will be matched with their new homes. The final decision will be made after the 8 week evals but we should have a pretty good idea by the time we confirm our thoughts on placements. I'll be pulling my "show prospect" pups out at that time too. Of course I will need to evaluate Daisy's pups also before I can make final decisions.

Outdoor fun begins this weekend and new things will be added during the week for them to explore. They'll really start making progress in the maturity department and play times will be longer and longer.

We haven't noticed any teeth starting to poke thru yet and Charm is still happily feeding them. I don't get in a hurry to wean and take cues from the mom.The pups are gaining well and Charm is holding her weight too.Always trying to guess the eventual sizes but it's still too early to tell. I've compared them to some previous litters and have decided that weights at this age are essentially meaningless. More relevant is that they are healthy, sleek, shiny and happy puppies!

Enjoy the new pictures!

Charms flowers are 4 weeks old!

And boy are they getting busy. I'll get pictures on Sunday but for now, I'm uploading a video to enjoy from last night onto YouTube. It should be ready soon so check there for a newt video.

Grandma is in charge today, I'm off to work.

Daisy's Coffee kids are 3 weeks old

Nice to see some eyes! They are typical 3 week old pups, just starting to hear and react to sounds. Eating sleeping and trying to learn to use the UGO. Its all good!

Charm's flowers are 3 weeks (plus a few days)

and their weight chart

Moving day

The pups are being moved to the kitchen during the day and will go back into their bedroom quarters at night. Cams are moving to the kitchen also and taking over the kitchen table! Hopefully I can find a good place for them to set without having my poor MIL tripping over cords! We'll be back online after everything is set up and pups are moved.

I'll get pictures later on for Charm's kids.

Daisy's pups 2 week

Charm's flowers video

Happy Friday!

Maxwell has both eyes open but he's the only one. Maybe by this afternoon someone else will follow. I'll take pictures either way before I miss taking the 2 weeks all together!

I made Charm's videos public. Too many people having trouble seeing them.

I am setting up the new laptop for Charm's webcam. I hope this will fix the constant crashing! grrrrrr

and still.....

No eyes. I'm delaying pics until they have eyes!!!

I did a video this morning of Charms kids. In order to be able to view it, you need to find a button that says "follow" or "join crowd". That's they only way you can view it! I promise its worth the effort. Grrrring and barking....adorable.

*update* I made the video public. Too many people having problems.

No eyes yet

Daisy's pups still don't have eyes open yet so not much to report there! Charm's kids are starting to interact with each other. Too cute.

Here is a picture that was drawn by a very sweet young lady that came to visit a few days ago.
Thank you Mal!

cams are up?

I finally got both cams online and hopefully they will stay there. Mom will be coming by several times today as I'm training in the ER again. No eyes on Daisy's kids, maybe they need some coffee to go with that milk!

I'll take pictures of Daisy's kids on Thursday! (day off) Maybe we'll have some eyes then.

Charm's kids got some new digs. Let me know if the camera angle works OK.

Monday, August 15, 2011

Good morning

I have to leave for work and have been unable to get Charm's cam up. So for today, its just all about Daisy's babies! =)

Saturday, August 13, 2011

Happy Saturday!

Autumn and Sweet Pea have eyes this morning. SO cute!! I'm working the 12 hour shift at the hospital today so grandpa Scott will be taking care of the crew.

Have a great Saturday everyone!

Charm and Champ babies are 2 weeks!`

Charm and Daisy both got a full groom today and look wonderful. Both are holding their weights really well, Daisy is actually a little chubby but this isn't the time for a diet.

Sorry, no puppy portraits today. I'll get them done on Sunday and maybe we'll have some eyes. Sweet Pea cracked a little of one eye today so the rest will follow soon. I took some group pictures to share.

2 weeks tomorrow!

And yet....still no eyes open. This is like waiting for a pot to boil!

The lamp will be off over Charm's box until after their eyes are open. I don't want to expose them to a bright light. Just daylight from the window for a few days.

Cam is up....?

I just got the cams back online but I'm heading to work. Maybe they will stay on this time!

intenet issues

The cams are off due to technical difficulties! I've messed with them for as long as I can so they are just going to stay off for now. I'll try again this afternoon if I have time before work. Sorry!!

Gaining and growing

The pups are gaining and growing like weeds. Won't be long before Charm's pups have their eyes open. They all are fighting the puppy exercises in the morning, can't say I blame them! Being flipped upside down and then stuck on a cold rag can't be their favorite thing. =)

Weights on Charm's pups at 11 days:
William 14.2 oz
Autumn 12.2 oz
Alyssum 14.5 oz
Sweet Pea 13.3 oz

Daisy's pups at 6 days
Melitta 11.6 oz
Starbucks 12.4 oz
Maxwell 15.0 oz and no that is not a typo!

I will get pictures on Daisy's pups tomorrow for their one week collage. I'll do Charm's on Sunday and maybe we'll have some eyes lookin' at you.

TGIF

Thank goodness its Friday!

Charm's pups are doing well, consistent weight gains. Charm is a fabulous mother!

Daisy's pups are gaining like mad, puppy #3 might have to move next door with Charms pups! =) He's much bigger than his siblings.

I finally got Daisy's pups named and their collage done. Charm's pups will get new pics tomorrow.

All is well in puppyland

Both moms and all the babies are doing fabulous. Couldn't ask for anything better...well I do wish Daisy would drink more water. We are trying to get her to drink more using a spoon. =) Tonight I added some chicken broth to her water and she seemed to like that!

Everyone is gaining weight and I'm a happy PQ.

Busy day tomorrow so I won't be around all day. Hopefully the webcams stay online! Grandma will be coming over every 1-2 hours to check on the crew. I hope to have names for Daisy's litter soon. I will be spending a lot of time driving tomorrow so maybe I'll come up with something.

The spot

Daisy has finally settled on the kennel in my bedroom. She's been in there resting for the last hour and no longer is looking for me. She sleeps and then wakes with a start to nibble at her side and changes positions. Then dozes again. I don't see any contractions yet but I know first stage of labor has started.

I closed all the blinds and covered the kennel with a blanket so she feels more secure. It's very dark as you can see, had to use the flash for the 2nd shot. I'll keep checking on her every so often. Hopefully contractions will start soon. Pups can come within minutes or several hours after I can see contractions and I do not see any signs yet. No panting, no digging. Just resting. And nibbling. =)

Where oh where?

Daisy was restless last night and refused most of her breakfast. She can't find the right place to be and has been under the beds, behind the couch, in doorless kennels, in the closet.....then after digging and laying for a few minutes she comes running to see where I am.She'll hang by me for a bit and then off she goes to find that perfect nest. She's still smiling and wagging her tail but I can see the wheels turning that she feels the stir. Mother Nature is talking to her.

Charm's Sweet babies are wonderful. Weights are good and all seem strong and healthy.
William 8.1 oz
Autumn 7.4 oz
Alyssum 8.1 oz
Sweet Pea 7.2 oz

Puppy exercises start this morning. You can read about them on my website under the Early Neurological Stimulation

That's all for this morning but I'll post again if Daisy does anything else!

Monday, August 1, 2011

Monday evening

Daisy did a little nesting today but she's still running around playing with her toys. We'll go to bed early just in case we don't get much sleep.

Charm's flowers are precious, doing wonderful.

11:15 pm - Daisy is stuck to me like glue. She isn't usually a lap dog but she's been laying on my lap for the last hour. Time for bed, wonder if anyone will sleep. I have a night light on top of her crate (wire top) so I can easily see what she's up to without turning on the light. Sweet dreams!

Monday August 1st

Daisy's temp was down last night and this morning she's at 98.2.( A normal temperature for a dog is usually 100-102.5 degrees. A significant drop, which probably means labor will begin in 12-24 hours, is usually below 99 degrees F and sometimes as low as 98 degrees) So according to her history, she should have pups within the next 24 hours. She ate breakfast and isn't showing any signs.

Pups all put on about 3/10 oz each from last night. All is well with CharmyCharm too.

Daisy - Sunday evening

I haven't seen any signs from Daisy that pups will come soon. Everyone get a good sleep tonight!

Charm and Champ babies

Finally got all the pictures done and pups are named. I was working in my garden a few weeks ago and realized I had them all, right there in front of me. I have a SWEET garden!

Sunday morning Daisy update

Well panting and yawning seem to mean "I'm hot and tired" because she slept like a log on her cool pad in the crate. She ate a little bit of breakfast and is playing with her squeaky toy. Darn it!

Saturday, July 30, 2011

Sat. evening Daisy update

She's been panting a bit (its not hot) and yawning. I believe the little ones are stirring! What does that mean? Stay tuned! =)

Who Knew?

Gave Daisy a nice bath and condition, along with some oil to protect her coat from stains when she has the pups. She's all pretty and smells so nice.

Then Charm had to have a full bath instead of the partial post-whelp bath because a FLEA jumped on me when I was petting her this morning! She had to have picked it up at the vet when I took her out into the yard for a potty between pups. We have never had issues with ticks or fleas and a few years ago I actually asked my groomer to show me a flea so I would know one if I saw it! So I know that is what it was. Haven't seen any more and didn't find any in the tub. All the bedding that we used is in the washer with hot water right now so hopefully that was the only one.

I took Charm out for potty before her bath and then she got washed and conditioned really good. I dried her as fast as I could, not bothering to brush at all. She kept giving me this look....I was sure it was the "hurry Mom! I need my babies!" but nope. It was "sorry Mom but I'm going to squat and pee right here and now on the table". That was a new one on me! Who knew that's what the look was about?! LOL I told her it was ok and finished drying her. She still looks beautiful even if it killed me not to brush her too. I'll get her tomorrow!

Both girls ate a good lunch of crock-pot chicken and vegs. Daisy still not showing any signs of labor coming on. I hoped the blow dryer would get those pups stirred up good. =)

Time for a break and then on to puppy pictures and to try to come up with names for Charm's kids.
